Bengaluru, June 13 (NationPress) - On Friday, Congress MLA and Chairman of the Karnataka Urban Water Supply and Drainage Board (KUWSB), Vinay Kulkarni, surrendered to the special court for MLA/MPs in Bengaluru regarding the 2016 murder case of BJP leader Yogesh Gowda.

The Supreme Court revoked his bail related to the case, prompting Kulkarni to declare his intention to comply with the apex court's directive and surrender.

Following this, the Special Court has transferred MLA Kulkarni to the custody of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

Gowda, a member of the Zilla Panchayat, was murdered in his gym on June 15, 2016. At the time, Kulkarni served as a minister in the Siddaramaiah-led Congress government. It was alleged that Gowda was brutally killed to undermine his political ascent and diminish the BJP's presence in the area.

During his election campaign, former Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa promised to incarcerate Kulkarni in connection with this case. After taking office, he assigned the investigation to the CBI, which arrested Kulkarni on November 5, 2020.

After spending nine months in jail, Kulkarni was released on August 13, 2021, with the Supreme Court imposing a condition that he must not enter the Dharwad district. Remarkably, despite this restriction, he successfully won the Dharwad seat in the 2023 Assembly elections, aided by his wife and daughter’s campaigning.

The Supreme Court mandated a swift investigation in this case, emphasizing the need for timely witness examinations. The CBI, vigilant in monitoring the witnesses, allegedly discovered attempts to bribe them, which led the agency to present evidence in court.

Following a petition by the CBI, which accused Kulkarni of trying to influence witnesses through monetary incentives, the Supreme Court rescinded his bail and ordered him to surrender within a week.

When questioned about the potential implications for him, Kulkarni stated: "There are numerous involved individuals... I can't claim this is my issue. The court will evaluate the evidence and render its decision. There is a higher power. Everyone is aware... some wish to see me imprisoned."

Meanwhile, sources indicate that the state unit of Congress is apprehensive about this unfolding situation.
