Terror suspect Suhail, arrested in connection with an alleged terror-related case in Davanagere district, Karnataka, made provocative gestures towards media personnel on Wednesday, 1 July while being escorted by police for a routine medical examination at the Government Hospital in Harihara town. The incident unfolded under tight security as Suhail — his face covered with a mask — waved at journalists and pointed his finger at television cameras both on his way into the hospital and while being escorted back to the police vehicle.

What Happened at the Hospital

Suhail was brought to the Government Hospital, Harihara for a routine medical check-up as part of standard custody procedures. As he was led through the premises, he turned towards assembled media and made deliberate gestures in their direction. Security personnel swiftly moved him away following the examination. Authorities have not officially commented on the behaviour displayed by the accused during the visit.

Background: The Arrest and Alleged Links

Suhail was arrested on 23 June from Bannikodu village in Davanagere district in a joint operation by police and intelligence officials. A native of Shahjahanpur, Uttar Pradesh, he had arrived in Harihar taluk just two weeks prior, ostensibly for painting work, and was residing in a village under the jurisdiction of the Harihar Rural Police Station. A case has been registered at that station, confirmed Karnataka State Home Minister Priyank Kharge.

Preliminary investigations reportedly revealed suspected terror-related content on his WhatsApp and Instagram accounts. According to investigators, he was allegedly in contact with handlers and suspects based in Pakistan, with phone numbers from Pakistan saved in his contacts under the name 'Rana Ji'. Police have also recovered photographs of Suhail posing with weapons.

Alleged Plans and Digital Evidence

Investigators allege that Suhail had reportedly planned to carry out an explosion at the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya, and that his alleged plans extended to terror activities in multiple parts of the country. He was allegedly a member of WhatsApp groups named 'Rana bai' and 'Juttu', which are suspected to have been used by individuals involved in anti-national activities. Audio recordings of conversations reportedly containing discussions about planned terror activities in different regions have also been seized from his mobile phone.

NIA Involvement and Ongoing Probe

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has taken up questioning of Suhail as part of its ongoing investigation. Police are also tracking 9 other individuals who reportedly travelled to the Harihar region along with him. The detailed examination of his mobile phone is said to have yielded several investigative leads. Further investigation remains underway, with the accused continuing to be held in the custody of investigating agencies.

The incident at the hospital adds a new dimension to an already high-profile case that has drawn national attention over its alleged cross-border dimensions.
