Bengaluru, May 31 (NationPress) Despite the pushback from farmers and the BJP regarding the Hemavathi Express Link Canal Project, which led to a temporary suspension of activities, the Karnataka government has declared that the initiative will proceed as 40 percent of the work is already finished.
Local farmers are voicing their opposition to the Link Canal Project, alleging that it intends to reroute water from the Hemavathi River to the Ramanagara district. The project's leadership falls under the jurisdiction of Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, who also holds the Water Resources Minister title.
The BJP and protesting farmers have issued a one-month ultimatum for the government to cease the project. Local BJP MLA Suresh Gowda has ominously stated that the water will flow over his dead body.
D.K. Shivakumar emphasized that halting the Hemavathi Express Link Canal project is not an option, given the significant progress made.
In response to the widespread protests against the canal, Shivakumar remarked, "Both the protestors and supporters are our farmers. We are committed to safeguarding everyone's interests."
When asked about MLA Suresh Gowda's objections, he remarked, "MLAs Krishnappa and Suresh Gowda are well-informed about this project. They have previously expressed support for it. If they are protesting now, I cannot say it is wrong. All legislators are aware of the project's details."
Thousands of farmers and BJP leaders in Karnataka organized a large protest on Saturday against the initiation of work on the contentious Hemavathi River Link Canal Project near Gubbi in the Tumakuru district, despite strong opposition from local farmers.
Police detained over 100 protestors, including BJP MLA Suresh Gowda, Jyothi Ganesh, BJP District President Ravishankar, and farmer leader Chandrashekar.
The protest, which saw participation from religious leaders, their followers, and numerous farmers, escalated tensions, prompting the district administration to halt work temporarily.
Heavy security measures have been implemented in Gubbi, Nittur, and adjacent areas.
Protesters argue that the government is attempting to divert the water share of Tumakuru district to the Ramanagara region. They firmly state that they will not permit their rightful share of water to be taken.
Meanwhile, MLA Suresh Gowda has called for an all-party meeting.
"The residents of our district fear that their water share is being rerouted to Ramanagara. Congress legislators from this area are unable to oppose this and are urging us to protest," MLA Gowda stated.
"This is a death warrant for the district. Thousands have come forward voluntarily to halt the project," he added.
He criticized the project as unscientific, highlighting that they have been protesting for the past two years, voicing their concerns in the Assembly and organizing protest marches.
