Chennai, Sep 30 (NationPress) A delegation from the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), headed by BJP MP and actress Hema Malini, traveled to Karur on Tuesday to investigate the tragic stampede that resulted in 41 fatalities during the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief Vijay's campaign rally on September 27.
The team engaged with the families of victims and those injured before addressing the press.
Hema Malini, deeply affected by the scene, remarked that the disaster could have been averted if the authorities had allocated a more spacious venue for Vijay's event.
"For a celebrity of his prominence, allowing only a narrow road for such a massive gathering was unjust. Numerous women and young girls had come to see Vijay. A larger venue would have prevented this tragedy," she stated.
The actor-politician emphasized that the team had collected direct testimonies from witnesses and survivors.
"We met the affected individuals and listened to their anguish. Such a large-scale incident is unprecedented in Tamil Nadu's political landscape," she commented.
TVK had requested a slightly bigger venue, but the government should have approved it, she added.
Anurag Thakur, former Union minister and member of the NDA delegation, voiced similar concerns and called for accountability from the Tamil Nadu government and police.
"Upon visiting the site, we were overwhelmed with emotions. A location that could barely accommodate 300 people was expected to host thousands. The government must clarify the police's role and what went awry," he argued, mentioning that the NDA team of MPs would compile a comprehensive report for BJP national president J.P. Nadda within a week.
Thakur proposed that an independent investigation be conducted by a sitting Supreme Court judge.
The tragic events at the September 27 rally in Karur's Velusamypuram, part of Vijay's rapidly expanding political movement, escalated when large crowds surged forward amid chaos, reportedly caused by insufficient space and power outages.
Many victims were women and children, who became trapped in the turmoil. This tragedy has ignited a political uproar in Tamil Nadu, with the ruling DMK defending its actions while opposition parties accuse the government of negligence.
Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has announced a judicial inquiry headed by retired Justice Aruna Jagadeesan and pledged to implement safety protocols for future political gatherings.
