Is Kejriwal's Absence from the Panel Hearing a Contempt of the House?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Jan 9 (NationPress) The Privileges Committee of the Delhi Assembly has put forth a recommendation for “appropriate action” against AAP leader and former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, along with three of his party colleagues, due to their intentional absence from meetings set to address alleged false claims regarding “Faansi Ghar”. Speaker Vijender Gupta made this announcement on Friday.
“Despite being given sufficient opportunity, time, and clarifications, and with no stay order or directive from any Court, none of the four individuals — Former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, Former Speaker Ram Niwas Goel, Former Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, and Former Deputy Speaker Rakhi Birla – attended the Committee on the designated dates,” stated the Speaker, citing the Committee’s report.
“The Committee believes that such behavior constitutes contempt of the House and the Committee itself,” he added.
The Privileges Committee has urged that suitable measures be taken by the House against those individuals for their intentional non-attendance at the Committee's meetings.
The Speaker expressed, “I present this matter to the House with full confidence, trusting that the Members will deliberate on the Privileges Committee's recommendations and make a suitable decision in line with the Constitution, the law, and the traditions of this House.”
This issue revolves around the alleged false claims made during the prior AAP administration, which incorrectly identified a colonial-era “Tiffin Room” as a “Faansi Ghar” (Execution Chamber) within the Assembly premises.
The Speaker subsequently referred this matter to the Privileges Committee.
On Friday, he stated, “I wish to bring to this esteemed House the factual information that has come to light following the Privileges Committee's report. This issue is not only tied to a significant historical assertion but also closely linked to the powers, dignity, and operations of our Legislature and its Committees.”
He mentioned that after the Eighth Legislative Assembly was formed in February 2025, numerous initiatives were launched to protect and maintain the historical character of the Delhi Assembly Building. In this effort, official records and archival material were evaluated for historical accuracy and authenticity.
Information obtained from the National Archives has indicated that there was no “Faansi Ghar” within the Assembly; rather, the records show that the area in question was utilized as a “Tiffin Room”, he concluded.
