Thiruvananthapuram, July 18 (NationPress) The Vice-Chancellor of Kerala University, Dr. Mohanan Kunnummal, has come under scrutiny from activists of the Students’ Federation of India (SFI) due to recent protests. On Friday, he criticized the violence at the university headquarters, attributing it to what he describes as “student professionals.”
During his first media address since the unrest on June 30, Kunnummal explained that he had refrained from entering the office earlier due to the extensive damage caused by the demonstrators.
“I was informed that the protesters would allow me access to the office, which is why I am here today. I have signed 1,828 degree certificates and resolved all outstanding matters – everything is up to date now,” he stated.
Dr. Kunnummal, who also serves as the Vice-Chancellor of Kerala University of Health Sciences, openly criticized certain students. “Are you aware of the significant fraud being perpetrated by some students? They enroll in a three-year program, never take an exam, and after three years, switch to another course. Their primary role seems to be inciting unrest and political issues. These individuals are what I refer to as ‘student professionals,’” he remarked, asserting, “I am a medical professional – I uphold rules and accountability.”
Regarding the ongoing administrative strife, Kunnummal justified his choice to suspend Registrar Dr. K.S. Anil Kumar for allegedly showing disrespect towards the Chancellor, Governor Rajendra V. Arlekar.
“The Governor was invited to a university event, but the Registrar later advised him against attending. That constitutes clear disrespect, which is why he was suspended. An inquiry will reveal the motivations behind his actions. I call upon everyone to adhere to the regulations,” the Vice-Chancellor stated.
Kerala University, once esteemed as a leading educational institution, is now engulfed in administrative disorder, with two individuals simultaneously asserting their claim to the Registrar position – a situation indicative of the escalating power struggle between the Governor and the state government.
This week, protests led by the CPI(M)-affiliated SFI turned violent following the suspension of Registrar Anil Kumar. Although an acting Registrar has been designated, Kumar is still attending the office, defying the order.
At the core of this crisis is a political deadlock: VC Kunnummal has the backing of Governor Arlekar, whereas Registrar Kumar is supported by the Pinarayi Vijayan-led state government.
