Is Kerala's Youth Losing Interest in Politics? A.K. Antony Raises Alarm
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Thiruvananthapuram, Jan 29 (NationPress) A.K. Antony, a member of the Congress Working Committee and former Defence Minister, voiced his deep concern on Thursday regarding the escalating apathy of the younger generation towards politics and the growing hesitation among educated youth to stay in Kerala, often referred to as 'God’s Own Country'.
Speaking at an event here, Antony described this trend as worrying and emphasized the need for immediate self-reflection.
He stated that once the United Democratic Front (UDF) regains power, it must conduct a thorough investigation into the reasons behind the mass migration of educated youth from the state and develop swift solutions to curb this talent drain.
Antony acknowledged that the Congress party in Kerala had been graced by two invaluable leaders — K.A. Chandran and V.C. Kabeer.
He urged that Chandran's life, characterized by Gandhian principles and unwavering integrity, should serve as a guiding example for the younger demographic.
Notably, Chandran has lived a life of simplicity, refusing to accept even minor personal benefits from a public position.
Both Chandran and Kabeer, now in their early eighties, are former legislators, with the latter having served as a minister in the state as well.
Antony's comments came during the presentation of the 11th Gandhi Darshan Award, established by the KPCC Gandhi Darshan Samithi, to Chandran.
The event was chaired by Kabeer Master, the State President of the Gandhi Darshan Samithi.
The inaugural session of the Secular Protection Convention, linked to the event, was commenced by Sunny Joseph, the state Congress President.
Former state leader Ramesh Chennithala addressed the audience, highlighting attempts to undermine the significance of Mahatma Gandhi’s martyrdom and the foundational Gandhian values.
He claimed that the agenda of the Sangh Parivar, aimed at erasing Gandhi’s legacy, is fueling the rising communal divisions within the nation.
Chennithala also presented a shawl and a memento to Chandran.
