New Delhi, Dec 27 (NationPress) The National President of Congress, Mallikarjun Kharge, on Saturday, requested input from party members regarding a planned protest against the discontinuation of MGNREGA. He also emphasized the need for early preparations for Assembly elections in states such as Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Bengal, and others scheduled for April-May 2026.
During a meeting of the Congress Working Committee (CWC) held at the All India Congress Committee (AICC) headquarters at Indira Bhawan in New Delhi, Kharge stated that a nationwide initiative titled 'MGNREGA Action Plan' is essential to contest the government's choice to discontinue the rural employment program.
"This must be fervently opposed in every region of the country. In January 2015, when the Modi government altered the land acquisition law to favor corporate interests, Congress members took to the streets, compelling the government to back down," he remarked.
He also raised concerns regarding the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and reiterated allegations of collusion between the BJP and the Election Commission.
"Rahulji has repeatedly presented evidence of 'vote theft' to the public. The collusion between the BJP and the ECI is evident. Therefore, we must ensure that our supporters' names remain on the electoral rolls," he stated.
The CWC meeting saw participation from various leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, Chairperson of the Congress Parliamentary Party Sonia Gandhi, and numerous senior officials.
Kharge urged party members and Booth Level Agents to engage in door-to-door campaigns to prepare voter lists for upcoming elections in 2027.
Additionally, the Congress National President criticized the government for allegedly misusing investigative agencies to target opposition figures.
"Over the last 11 years, the country has witnessed the misuse of institutions like the ED, IT, and CBI. The BJP and the Sangh Parivar are attempting to tarnish our leaders' reputations in relation to the National Herald issue. We are engaged in a legal struggle. Rahulji often asserts, 'Satyameva Jayate', and we will prevail," he conveyed in a message on X.
Kharge condemned the violence against Hindus and minorities in Bangladesh and highlighted the alleged efforts by workers and organizations associated with the BJP and RSS to disrupt communal harmony during Christmas, which has negatively affected the country’s reputation globally.
Prominent leaders attending the CWC meeting included Congress General Secretary K.C. Venugopal, Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, senior Congress leader Harish Rawat, Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, former MP Salman Khurshid, and MPs Abhishek Manu Singhvi and Rajeev Shukla.
Moreover, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor was present at the meeting, despite his recent comments that reportedly diverged from the party's official position.
