New Delhi, Dec 14 (NationPress) Former Australian Test legend Mike Hussey advocates for the return of seasoned batter Usman Khawaja as the opener, suggesting that Travis Head should transition to the No. 5 position for the upcoming third Ashes Test, commencing Wednesday in Adelaide.
Khawaja, who had to miss the second Test triumph in Brisbane due to back spasms, faced limitations during Australia’s first innings after enduring significant downtime with a back injury while England batted in the series opener in Perth.
During Khawaja's absence, Travis Head shone brightly, delivering a monumental Ashes century that secured a remarkable victory. However, with Khawaja now fit and included in the 15-man squad for the Adelaide Test, Hussey believes it’s time for his return.
“I’d reinstate him immediately and shift Travis Head back to number five,” Hussey stated on Fox Cricket. “Usman Khawaja has only had one innings here in Perth affected by back spasms. Leading into the series, Khawaja was our top choice for the opening slot – we were uncertain about the other opener!”
“What’s altered after just one innings? He’s back from his injury now. Let’s get him back at the top of the order,” he added.
Hussey is convinced that Head’s return to the middle order could prove more advantageous against England, who currently trail 0-2 in the series.
“Get Travis Head back down to number five. I acknowledge Travis Head played a phenomenal innings as an opener in Perth during the First Test – but I prefer him at number five. Opening the batting consistently in Test cricket is incredibly challenging. I believe Travis Head can maintain more consistency in the middle order,” expressed Hussey.
If Khawaja is reinstated, it would likely mean dropping Josh Inglis, who batted at No. 7 in the Gabba and managed a modest 23, a sentiment echoed by former Australian great Adam Gilchrist.
“I believe they will opt to drop Inglis and reinstate Khawaja. The decision-makers will recognize that bringing Usman back is the strategic choice – returning to a more traditional opening approach.”
“Travis Head can then step into the middle order to deliver strong performances and possibly accelerate the tempo when necessary.”
“I think Usman will be positioned at the top.”
“It would be a difficult situation to assert that Usman was our key player in that initial Test match, and due to injury, his career would effectively end,” noted Gilchrist.
