New Delhi, Nov 30 (NationPress) Australia's Travis Head expressed his readiness to take on the opening role following his explosive century in the first Ashes Test. This comes amid ongoing uncertainties regarding Usman Khawaja's fitness and his future in the national team.
Head, who has primarily occupied the No. 5 position for Australia over the last four years, filled in as the opener during the second innings in Perth when Khawaja was out due to back spasms. He delivered a remarkable performance, scoring 123 off 83 balls, which propelled Australia to a swift pursuit of 205, securing a 1–0 lead in the series ahead of the upcoming Test at the Gabba.
Khawaja, who will celebrate his 39th birthday next month, is included in the 14-man squad and remains optimistic about his availability. However, with only one century and an average of 31.84 in the past two years, his position is uncertain.
Head noted that his role for the next Test is yet to be determined, but he is open to any responsibilities assigned to him, including another opportunity at the top order.
"I'm happy. If that's what's needed to win a Test match, then I'm all for it. I'm preparing for anything at this point... There’s a lot to consider. I’ve just arrived, and we haven’t had extensive discussions recently," Head stated, as quoted by The West Australian.
Australia's coach Andrew McDonald revealed after the Perth Test that the team had considered the possibility of rotating their opening pair between innings, a strategy Head is eager to adopt.
Head elaborated that this concept has been discussed for quite some time. "We've talked a lot about how we can achieve that, considering our personnel and the dynamics within the team," he explained.
"You’ve seen it in the T20 team where we’re trying to innovate in power-hitting and making strategic decisions on singles at various points... I believe I can adapt to any role, so I’m open to it, and it’s about figuring out when to implement it during the game," he added.
“All options have been on the table for a significant time regarding how this team can improve and seize opportunities to win games. It's always been a topic of discussion," Head concluded.
