Brisbane, Dec 9 (NationPress) Australia's seasoned opener Usman Khawaja is anticipated to rejoin the squad for the second Ashes Test in Adelaide, yet his position as an opener is not guaranteed.
During the opening match in Perth, Khawaja was sidelined from Australia’s first innings due to a prolonged absence for treatment on a back injury sustained while England batted. Initially, Marnus Labuschagne stepped in, but on day two, Travis Head seized the opportunity, delivering a remarkable century that defined the Ashes.
Should Khawaja return, it is likely he will reclaim his opening position, which would push Travis Head down to the fifth position. However, head coach Andrew McDonald emphasized that Khawaja's role is flexible. If he is reinstated, it might come at the cost of Josh Inglis.
“We have numerous players deeply committed to this series, willing to do anything for the team,” McDonald remarked on Tuesday.
“It's a common assumption that 'Uzzie' can only bat at the top, but he possesses the versatility to bat elsewhere. We believe our entire batting lineup should be adaptable to thrive in various positions.”
“We have a collective group of batters, and as the series progresses, the opposition will present new challenges. So, we remain open to how the lineup may evolve.”
Khawaja played at No. 5 upon his return to Test cricket during the 2021–22 Ashes before moving up to open for Head. McDonald noted that the prospect of moving Khawaja down the order has not been discussed since then.
“We've been searching for a partner for him. He’s been a reliable asset at the top, so we haven’t previously considered relocating him,” he stated.
“However, we are receptive to what the batting structure might look like moving forward if there are any changes. Whether Trav opens or returns to the middle order, that will unfold on a Test-by-Test basis.”
