Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Seoul, Feb 27 (NationPress) The North Korean leader, Kim Jong-un, has leveraged the recent party congress to strengthen his foothold for long-term authority, signaling the dawn of a new era, as reported by Seoul's unification ministry on Friday.
In a review of North Korea's ninth party congress, which wrapped up its week-long proceedings on Wednesday, the ministry highlighted that during his 15th year in leadership, Kim proclaimed the initiation of the "Kim Jong-un era" in a comprehensive manner.
At the first party congress in five years, Kim was reappointed as the general secretary of the ruling Workers' Party of Korea (WPK), emphasizing his commitment to enhancing the nation's nuclear deterrence under his command. This congress, held once every five years, provides a rare insight into the operations of a country where even the simplest details are often concealed in secrecy.
The ministry pointed to the absence of 'deference' references to the late state founder Kim Il-sung and former leader Kim Jong-il in Kim Jong-un's opening remarks as a basis for their assessment.
Additionally, the ministry noted that North Korea heralded Kim Jong-un's accomplishments, claiming they exceed those of his predecessors.
Furthermore, the unification ministry indicated that approximately half of the party officials in the central leadership were replaced during the congress, viewing this as a personnel reshuffle prioritizing performance.
The WPK elected 139 new members and 111 alternate members to its central committee during the gathering. Out of the 250 committee members, 139 were newly elected.
Choe Ryong-hae, the 76-year-old chairman of the North Korean parliament and a former military leader, was notably excluded from the central committee, along with several senior officials, indicating a significant generational shift in leadership, according to Yonhap news agency.
However, since taking the reins in 2011, Kim has continually emphasized the need to bolster the struggling economy of the nation.
