Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Seoul, Feb 21 (NationPress) North Korea announced on Saturday that it has attained exceptional success in the implementation of key policies over the last five years, coinciding with a significant party congress where Pyongyang is expected to reveal its future policy path.
In the presence of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, a policy review was conducted on Friday, marking the second day of the ruling Workers' Party of Korea's ninth party congress, which is regarded as the most important political event in the country since 2021, as reported by Yonhap, citing the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).
The high-profile gathering commenced on Thursday, where it aims to articulate major policy frameworks for the upcoming five years encompassing diplomacy, defense, the economy, and other sectors.
The KCNA emphasized that North Korea has successfully executed critical policy initiatives across various domains over the last five years, deeming it a phase of significant transformation.
According to the report, “The remarkable achievements, experiences, and lessons learned in the Party and state’s endeavors across politics, economy, culture, defense, diplomacy, and more... act as a launchpad for facilitating greater changes and successes.”
Furthermore, North Korea did not provide specifics regarding its evaluation of policy towards South Korea and the United States.
Policymakers in Seoul and Washington are closely monitoring this year’s party congress, the highest decision-making entity in North Korea, especially since both South Korean President Lee Jae Myung and US President Donald Trump have shown interest in resuming diplomatic relations with Pyongyang.
In his address on the first day of the congress, Kim praised the economic progress achieved over the last five years and assessed that North Korea's status is now firmly established as an “irreversible” entity.
Kim has characterized inter-Korean relations as those between “two states that are hostile to one another,” pledging to refrain from pursuing reconciliation or unification with South Korea. Additionally, the North has remained unresponsive to diplomatic outreach from Lee and Trump.
