Kolkata, Sep 24 (NationPress) Numerous locations in Kolkata remained inundated on Wednesday, over 24 hours following unprecedented rainfall. The city is grappling to regain normalcy after the heavy downpour resulted in the deaths of 10 individuals. City Mayor Firhad Hakim indicated on Tuesday that it would require a minimum of 14 hours for the situation to stabilize. However, many streets are still submerged.
As per the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC), extra pumps have been deployed throughout the city to expedite water removal. Consequently, conditions on the major roads have seen substantial improvement; nevertheless, the plight persists in the narrower lanes.
Areas such as College Street, Thanthania, Raja Rammohan Sarani, Keshab Sen Street, Anand Palit Road, Ballygunge Outpost, VIP Bazar, New Garia Housing, and Tagore Park are still facing water accumulation.
Ballygunge Outpost remains knee-deep in water. Additionally, water persists in sections of Rashbehari Avenue, Palm Avenue, Rabindra Sadan area, Patuli, Garia, New Garia, Santoshpur Avenue, part of Park Circus, the alleys of Topsia, Bospukur Talbagan area, Amherst Street, part of Nagerbazar, Boubazar, Mahatma Gandhi Road, specific areas of Metiaburj, Barisha, Sarsuna, and Joka. The Kankurgachi underpass is still submerged.
Meanwhile, water has not fully receded in Minto Park, Camac Street near AJC Bose Road, and has accumulated near Gariahat Road ITI.
KMC sources indicated that addressing the waterlogging issue promptly during Durga Puja has become a significant challenge.
"The roads could be cleared by today, assuming no further rain occurs. If heavy rain returns, the situation may worsen," stated a KMC official.
Fortunately, rainwater has receded in Salt Lake and Sector V, known as the IT hub, as well as College More Crossing and nearby regions.
Train services resumed normal operations on both the Sealdah (Main and North) and Howrah sections since Wednesday morning. However, water remains at Kolkata station on the Circular Railway route, although metro services have returned to normal.
On Tuesday, intense overnight rain caused the city and its surroundings to be inundated with knee-deep water, disrupting daily life. Over 300 mm of rain was recorded, starting after midnight and continuing until 5:30 pm on Tuesday. Tragically, around 10 people were electrocuted in the state, with eight in Kolkata. This led to disruptions in train and metro services, and traffic in Kolkata was entirely paralyzed as nearly every road became waterlogged.
