Kolkata, Sep 24 (NationPress) The Meteorological Department announced on Wednesday that the region will experience predominantly cloudy conditions along with light to moderate rainfall featuring thunderstorms and gusty winds in certain areas.
While rain is expected in Kolkata until the upcoming Saturday, heavy downpours are not anticipated at this time.
Weather conditions are predicted to improve somewhat starting Sunday.
This forecast has brought relief to residents of the city, as officials from the Civic Department are proactively working to channel water into the River Hooghly. With no indication of severe rainfall, the waterlogging situation in the city is expected to improve substantially by the evening.
On Tuesday, a month's worth of rain fell within just five hours, coinciding with a high tide in the River Hooghly during the most intense rainfall, leading to significant waterlogging throughout the city.
By Wednesday morning, conditions had improved, but it will take additional time for the water levels to drop.
The Meteorological Office recorded an astounding 252mm of rainfall in a five-hour period, with 185mm occurring between 2:30 a.m. and 5:30 a.m.
According to KMC reports, Garia received the highest rainfall at 332mm, followed by Jodhpur Park at 285mm, Ballygunge at 264mm, Ultadanga at 207mm, and Maniktala at 169mm.
Furthermore, the weather office indicated that not only in Kolkata but across the entirety of South Bengal, there is a potential for light to moderate rainfall.
Heavy rainfall may be observed in the two coastal districts of South 24 Parganas and East Midnapore. In addition, West Midnapore, Jhargram, and Bankura districts may also experience heavy rainfall until Saturday.
Simultaneously, winds could gust over 45 kilometers per hour in the northern Bay of Bengal and the sea bordering the West Bengal-Odisha coast. The met department has advised fishermen against venturing into the sea until next Saturday.
"On Thursday, a low-pressure system is projected to form over the northwestern and adjacent central Bay of Bengal. It may intensify and move westwards, reaching somewhere between the coasts of Andhra and Odisha on Friday. Due to this, moderate rain is expected in the districts of South Bengal and Kolkata until Saturday," stated a Meteorological Department representative.
Meanwhile, there is no expectation of heavy rainfall in the districts of North Bengal at this time. However, scattered light to moderate rain is possible across all districts in northern Bengal. Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning are predicted for nearly all districts of North Bengal on Friday and Saturday.
