Rainfall and Thunderstorms Expected in West Bengal Until Monday
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, March 14 (NationPress) The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), located in Alipore, Kolkata, announced on Saturday that rainfall, along with thunderstorms and strong winds, is expected to affect several districts in South Bengal, including Kolkata, over the upcoming days.
North Bengal is anticipated to see a greater impact from the rain, with heavy downpours predicted in certain districts, while other regions may receive light to moderate precipitation.
The forecast indicates that heavy rain is likely to persist until next Monday in five districts of north Bengal: Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri, Kalimpong, Cooch Behar, and Alipurduar.
In contrast, the remaining districts can expect light to moderate rainfall, potentially accompanied by gusty winds, with speeds ranging from 40 to 50 kilometers per hour, according to meteorological sources.
These weather conditions are set to linger in north Bengal to varying extents until next Wednesday.
A met department official stated, "The cyclonic circulation over Bangladesh and nearby areas—specifically over Gangetic West Bengal—has weakened slightly, yet the associated trough of low pressure remains active. This system spans from 1.5 kilometers to 4.5 kilometers above sea level, drawing significant moisture from the Bay of Bengal into the region."
As a result, the atmosphere is conducive to thunderstorms and rainfall throughout both north and south Bengal.
While south Bengal will experience rain, it is not expected to be as intense as in the north. Scattered showers will likely continue in several districts.
Beginning tomorrow (Sunday), the intensity of rainfall may rise in East Burdwan, West Burdwan, Nadia, Murshidabad, Purulia, Bankura, and Birbhum districts, where thunderstorms with lightning are also anticipated. This advisory will remain in effect until Tuesday.
Some areas may still experience rain on Wednesday. On Saturday, light rainfall is projected for Birbhum and Murshidabad, with additional rain possible in Jhargram and West Midnapore.
In Kolkata and neighboring regions, the minimum temperature recorded on Friday was 26.02 degrees Celsius, which is 3.6 degrees above normal, while the maximum temperature reached 33.7 degrees Celsius, only slightly above the normal range.
