Kolkata, April 16 (NationPress) — In a welcome change from the oppressive heat gripping West Bengal, the Regional Meteorological Centre in Alipore has announced the expected arrival of a Nor’wester over Kolkata and the southern districts of Bengal later today and into Friday.

The forecast indicates a significant likelihood of thunderstorms, complete with lightning and rain, commonly referred to as 'Kal baisakhi' in the region. Scattered rainfall is anticipated across all districts in West Bengal, including Kolkata.

A yellow alert has been issued for the districts of Howrah and South 24 Parganas. Residents can expect moderate rainfall coupled with thunderstorms and gusty winds reaching speeds of 30 to 40 km/h.

According to the Meteorological Office, Kolkata may also experience scattered thunderstorms. An orange alert has been declared for six districts in south Bengal: North 24 Parganas, Bankura, East Burdwan, West Burdwan, Nadia, and Birbhum.

The weather office mentioned that the likelihood of thunderstorms will persist beyond Thursday and Friday, particularly in Purulia, Bankura, West Midnapore, Jhargram, East Burdwan, West Burdwan, Birbhum, and Murshidabad.

Expect light to moderate rain with thunderstorms and lightning alongside gusty winds of 40 to 50 km/h. Additionally, light rain is probable in parts of Birbhum, Murshidabad, and Nadia over the weekend.

As a result of the thunderstorms, a slight drop in temperature is expected on Friday, but it will rise again over Saturday and Sunday. In Kolkata, daytime temperatures could reach 36 degrees Celsius, while western districts might see highs of 40 degrees Celsius.

Meanwhile, rainfall will persist in five districts of north Bengal. Thunderstorms are likely in Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Alipurduar, Cooch Behar, and Jalpaiguri. Residents can anticipate light to moderate rain with thunderstorms and lightning, along with gusty winds of 30 to 40 km/h in all north Bengal districts.
