Spring Brings Kolkata's First Rainfall of the Year
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Feb 24 (NationPress) As spring unfolds, Kolkata and the southern districts of Bengal experienced their inaugural rainfall of the year on Tuesday, reported the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC).
The city and its neighboring regions experienced light to moderate precipitation starting at 4 a.m., with sporadic showers noted across various districts.
Weather officials indicated that this rainy weather pattern could persist over the next few days. Furthermore, they confirmed that no significant temperature shifts are expected in either north or south Bengal within the upcoming week.
"From today, light to moderate showers are anticipated in numerous districts across southern Bengal. Some areas may also witness thunderstorms and gusty winds. Kolkata is not exempt from this weather, as the sky is forecasted to remain overcast, with light rain possible later in the day," stated a representative from the Meteorological Department.
He further detailed that light to moderate rain is expected in parts of Purulia, Jhargram, Bankura, East Burdwan, West Burdwan, Birbhum, Hooghly, Howrah, Kolkata, Murshidabad, North 24 Parganas, South 24 Parganas, Nadia, East Midnapore, and West Midnapore. Thundershowers and brisk winds are also expected, with speeds reaching 30-40 km/h.
The rainfall is attributed to a low-pressure system that has formed over the Bay of Bengal. A cyclone that developed in the southeastern Bay of Bengal and adjacent Indian Ocean has now transitioned to a low-pressure area, currently located in the central south Bay of Bengal and gradually shifting north and northwest. Eventually, it is expected to head towards the eastern Indian Ocean and southwestern Bay of Bengal," the official explained.
In contrast, north Bengal's weather is predicted to be different. The weather office anticipates light to moderate fog in the districts of Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri, Cooch Behar, and North Dinajpur over the next few days. Although a major temperature change is not expected, a slight increase of about 2 degrees Celsius might occur over the weekend.
"Later this week, the low-pressure system may also impact north Bengal, potentially bringing light rain and thundershowers to some hilly regions, including Kalimpong," the official added.
