Kolkata and South Bengal Brace for Rainfall Until Tuesday
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, March 12 (NationPress) The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) situated in Alipore has predicted that rainfall will affect various districts in West Bengal, including Kolkata, starting this Thursday.
The meteorological department indicates that sporadic showers are anticipated in Kolkata until the following Tuesday. Similar weather patterns are expected to persist in surrounding districts such as Howrah, Hooghly, Purulia, Bankura, East Burdwan, West Burdwan, Birbhum, and Murshidabad. Rain alerts have been issued for a total of 12 districts in south Bengal.
The weather bureau noted that there will be minimal fluctuation in the minimum temperatures across these districts over the upcoming week. However, daytime temperatures might increase by two to three degrees Celsius before experiencing a drop after approximately three days.
In contrast, regions in north Bengal are expected to encounter thunderstorms until next Tuesday. Light rain accompanied by thunder is likely, particularly in areas like Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Alipurduar, Cooch Behar, and Jalpaiguri. Gusty winds at speeds ranging from 30 to 50 km/h may also be observed in these regions.
For Thursday, the forecast suggests that Kolkata will experience partly cloudy skies during the day, with potential for isolated light thunderstorms in the afternoon. The maximum and minimum temperatures are predicted to be around 32 degrees Celsius and 25 degrees Celsius, respectively.
An official from the meteorological department explained that the current weather activity is influenced by a low-pressure system extending from West Assam to Gangetic Bengal through Bangladesh at an altitude of about 1.5 km. Additionally, a cyclonic circulation exists between 1.5 km and 3.1 km above sea level over the south Bay of Bengal and adjacent north Sri Lanka. These atmospheric conditions are expected to facilitate light rainfall across parts of Bengal.
On Wednesday, the recorded minimum temperature in Kolkata and nearby areas was 24.6 degrees Celsius, which is 2.9 degrees above the normal range. The maximum temperature was noted at 30.8 degrees Celsius, approximately 2.2 degrees below normal. The relative humidity fluctuated between 61% and 95% throughout the day.
