Kolkata, July 26 (NationPress) With Kolkata and its surrounding regions experiencing heavy rainfall for the past two days, resulting in significant waterlogging in various areas, the Meteorological Department has announced a forecast of widespread rains throughout West Bengal until July 31.
Although the intensity of rainfall is expected to decrease slightly on Sunday, it will pick up again starting Monday, as another low-pressure system is anticipated to develop in the North Bay of Bengal, according to the latest forecast.
The Meteorological Office noted that the low-pressure area off the coast of West Bengal has been moving west-northwest at a speed of 25 kilometers per hour over the last six hours.
As of Saturday morning, its location was over Jharkhand, approximately 20 km northwest of Ranchi and 120 km west-northwest of Jamshedpur. Over the next 36 hours, it is expected to continue its movement in the same direction, passing over Chhattisgarh, northeast Madhya Pradesh, and southeast Uttar Pradesh.
This weather pattern will likely lead to ongoing thunderstorms in South Bengal over the next 24 hours, with a chance of extremely heavy rainfall in certain areas.
"Given the active monsoon winds, light to moderate rain will persist in the districts of South Bengal until July 31. Heavy showers may also hit some locations. Rainfall is projected to intensify starting Monday as another low-pressure system is likely to form in the Bay of Bengal," stated a senior official from the weather department.
For the upcoming two days, scattered rainfall accompanied by thunder showers and wind gusts of 30 to 40 kilometers per hour are expected in Kolkata and nearby areas. A similar forecast has been issued for districts including Howrah, Hooghly, North 24 Parganas, East Midnapore, West Midnapore, Jhargram, East Burdwan, West Burdwan, and Birbhum.
Heavy rainfall is anticipated in South 24 Parganas, Purulia, and Bankura districts on Saturday and Sunday, with additional heavy rainfall expected in Nadia and Murshidabad on Sunday.
From Tuesday onward, several districts, including Kolkata, will likely experience heavy rain. An orange alert has been issued for North 24 Parganas and South 24 Parganas.
Fishermen have been advised against venturing into the sea until Tuesday due to rough conditions.
There is also a risk of heavy rainfall in North Bengal. An alert has been issued for Jalpaiguri and Alipurduar for Sunday, with heavy rains expected in Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri, North Dinajpur, and South Dinajpur districts on Monday.
Due to overnight rainfall, certain areas of Kolkata faced waterlogging on Saturday, with traffic moving slowly along Central Avenue, MG Road, AJC Bose Road, and College Street.
