Kolkata, Aug 6 (NationPress) The Meteorological (MeT) office announced on Wednesday that heavy rainfall is expected across the districts of South Bengal in the coming days due to a cyclonic circulation system anticipated to form over Gangetic West Bengal, leading to yet another spell of intense showers.
An official from the MeT department indicated that a cyclonic circulation currently positioned over Bangladesh is likely to move into the state. "This will result in a new bout of heavy rain throughout all districts of South Bengal over the next few days. Meanwhile, rainfall is expected to persist in several districts today and tomorrow," stated a representative from the Regional Meteorological Centre located in Alipore, Kolkata.
Since July, West Bengal has been experiencing a prolonged period of intense rainfall due to a series of low-pressure systems coupled with cyclonic circulation. The active monsoon winds have also facilitated moisture influx from the Bay of Bengal, contributing to increased precipitation.
Simultaneously, North Bengal is also encountering heavy to very heavy rainfall influenced by the monsoon trough, which stretches from Punjab to Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Arunachal Pradesh, and near the Himalayan foothills.
The South Bengal districts of North 24 Parganas, South 24 Parganas, Howrah, and Nadia are anticipated to receive substantial rainfall. Districts including Birbhum, Murshidabad, East Burdwan, West Burdwan, Bankura, West Midnapore, and South 24-Parganas are also expected to experience heavy rain on Thursday.
A warning for heavy rainfall has been issued for the North Bengal districts of Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Jalpaiguri, and Alipurduar until Thursday.
On Friday, heavy rain is likely in the districts of Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Jalpaiguri, and Alipurduar. Additionally, there is a possibility of light to moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms in all North Bengal districts over the next several days. Light to moderate rain, along with lightning, is also expected in other districts.
The flood-like conditions in North Bengal caused by overflowing rivers are projected to persist until next week. Due to the heavy rain, a warning for further landslides has been issued for the hills of North Bengal.
Meanwhile, Kolkata has been experiencing moderate rainfall since the morning. According to the MeT department, there is a chance of light to moderate rain later in the day.
The maximum temperature recorded in Kolkata on Tuesday was 31.6 degrees Celsius, which is 0.4 degrees below normal. The minimum temperature was 25.2 degrees Celsius, 1.3 degrees below normal.
