Bhopal, June 26 (NationPress) Karnataka Governor Thaawar Chand Gehlot remarked on Thursday that the nation has achieved remarkable growth across various sectors in the 75 years since Independence. However, he noted that the "Emergency" declared on June 25, 1975, continues to cast a shadow over India’s democracy.
These comments were made during a state-level conference of "democracy fighters" held at the residence of Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav in Bhopal.
The Governor served as the chief guest at the event, which was also attended by Chief Minister Yadav.
In his address to the attendees, many of whom were imprisoned under the Maintenance of Internal Security Act (MISA) for opposing the Emergency, Governor Gehlot reflected on the issuance of 46 ordinances during that turbulent period.
He emphasized, "India is the world's largest democratic nation, and the sacrifices made by democracy fighters are crucial for its resilience. This conference is a vital platform to educate people about the events of June 25, 1975, during the Emergency."
The conference was organized by the Madhya Pradesh government to honor the contributions of "democracy fighters" (MISA bandis).
Governor Gehlot stated, "While democracy fighters are being honored in over 12 states, the Madhya Pradesh government has extended the most comprehensive support to them."
Additionally, highlighting India’s progress in the last two decades, particularly under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP government in the past 11 years, the Governor predicted that by the centenary of Independence in 2047, India will emerge as a global leader.
During the conference's concluding session, CM Yadav remarked that democracy is a fundamental aspect of Indian culture.
"Democracy is not merely a governance system; it is the essence and identity of our way of life. This principle has been embedded in the Indian psyche since ancient times, and it is our duty to uphold this democratic legacy," he said.
He acknowledged the crucial role of democracy fighters in fortifying democracy and asserted that the current democratic framework is a result of their unwavering struggle and sacrifices.
"Today, we thrive within a robust and accountable democratic system, fundamentally supported by the democracy fighters," the Governor concluded.
