Patna, May 3 (NationPress) Union Minister and senior JDU leader Rajiv Ranjan Singh, widely recognized as Lalan Singh, has harshly criticized the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) for its perceived hypocrisy regarding the caste-based census, claiming they prioritize dynastic politics over genuine social justice.
During a media briefing, Singh stated that RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav was more focused on thwarting Nitish Kumar from becoming Chief Minister in 2005 than advocating for a caste census, despite having supported the formation of the UPA government in 2004.
“In 2005, Lalu Yadav, acting as the Railway Minister, contacted the Prime Minister at 2 a.m. to request the immediate dissolution of the Bihar Assembly, aiming to obstruct Nitish Kumar’s swearing-in. If a caste census had been his genuine agenda, wouldn't he have brought that up instead?” Singh queried.
He challenged Tejashwi Yadav to produce any video or statement from Lalu Yadav that explicitly demanded a caste census during that period.
“The RJD lacks a substantive agenda. Their politics are mired in dynasties and corruption. From the fodder scam to the land-for-jobs scandal, they’ve exploited the state. If Tejashwi truly advocates for social justice, how did he accumulate thousands of crores before turning 18?” Singh raised.
“RJD party members are well aware of the costs associated with joining their ranks,” Singh added.
Following the announcement from the Centre, Lalu Prasad responded by recalling the decision made under his leadership in 1996-97, during the United Front government, to conduct a caste census, which was intended for implementation in 2001.
However, this initiative was canceled by the Atal Bihari Vajpayee-led NDA government. Lalu Prasad mentioned that during the 2011 census, he, along with Mulayam Singh Yadav and Sharad Yadav, raised the issue in Parliament and allowed it to proceed only after then-PM Manmohan Singh assured a socio-economic survey.
He credited the first caste survey in Bihar to the 17-month Mahagathbandhan government, asserting that the RJD's position has remained consistent.
