Jammu, July 23 (NationPress) In a devastating event, a landslide in Jammu and Kashmir’s Reasi district claimed the lives of two labourers and left one person seriously injured on Wednesday.
Officials reported, “In a tragic turn of events, two labourers were killed and another sustained severe injuries in a landslide that struck during the night between Tuesday and Wednesday near Shiv Gufa in the Badora region of Tehsil Mahore within Reasi district.”
The landslide occurred around 2 a.m. while the victims were resting in a makeshift tent close to a cave. They were part of a construction team preparing for a significant religious event at the Shiv Gufa (Shiva Cave) and were operating a JCB machine for a pilgrimage-related project, as mentioned by the officials.
“Without warning, a massive landslide hit the vicinity, causing debris and loose soil from the nearby hillside to tumble down, burying the tent where the workers were sleeping. Despite the swift action by local police and rescue teams, two labourers were discovered deceased at the scene,” the officials elaborated.
The deceased were identified as Rashpal Singh, 26, son of Soba Ram, a resident of Tuli Kalaban, Tehsil Chassana, District Reasi, and Ravi Kumar, 23, son of Parshotam Kumar, hailing from Tehsil Chenani, District Udhampur.
Another injured labourer was promptly transported to Mahore Hospital, where he is currently receiving treatment for his serious injuries.
Authorities are pursuing necessary legal procedures, and a thorough investigation is underway.
Meanwhile, the district administration has expressed heartfelt condolences to the grieving families and pledged all possible support.
This tragic occurrence highlights the susceptibility of hilly regions to natural calamities, particularly during the monsoon season.
Officials noted that the Jammu-Srinagar national highway was obstructed on Wednesday due to flash floods and mudslides at Magarkote in the Ramban district. Travelers are advised to refrain from traveling without confirming the current status of the national highway.
Landslides, mudslides, and earth caving have led to fatal incidents in the hilly districts of Reasi, Ramban, Udhampur, Kishtwar, Poonch, and Rajouri districts within the Jammu division.
