Seoul, Feb 11 (NationPress) South Korean President Lee Jae Myung is set to host a luncheon with the heads of the ruling Democratic Party (DP) and the leading opposition People Power Party (PPP) this week to explore methods for fostering bipartisan cooperation on economic matters and other pressing issues, as stated by Cheong Wa Dae.

On Thursday, Lee will engage with DP leader Jung Chung-rae and PPP leader Jang Dong-hyeok at Cheong Wa Dae to deliberate on a wide array of state affairs, according to Kang Hoon-sik, the presidential chief of staff, who spoke to reporters as reported by Yonhap News Agency.

"This luncheon aims to discuss strategies for enhancing citizen welfare and ensuring stable governance," Kang remarked. "They are anticipated to share honest perspectives on a broad spectrum of governmental matters without restricting the discussion agenda."

Potential discussion points may include ongoing trade negotiations with the United States, as Seoul faces pressure to advance a special investment bill linked to a bilateral trade agreement with Washington, following threats from US President Donald Trump last month to raise reciprocal tariffs and duties on South Korea.

On Tuesday, Lee Jae Myung urged the National Assembly to expedite its legislative processes, warning that the government would struggle to adapt to the shifting global landscape if these procedures remain sluggish.

Lee's comments came during a Cabinet meeting, highlighting the increasing uncertainties in the world and the fierce competition among nations that could destabilize the conventional world order.

“Responding proactively to the rapidly evolving international context is proving challenging at the current legislative pace,” Lee stated.

“A diverse array of bills is crucial for bolstering national competitiveness by supporting foreign trade negotiations, advancing regulatory reforms, and nurturing catalysts for extensive transformation,” he added.

Lee called for bipartisan collaboration on matters of national interest, particularly in foreign affairs, amid a volatile global environment and the swift evolution of artificial intelligence technologies.

“The global instability is remarkably high, and competition among nations has intensified to the point of undermining international order,” he commented. “In such circumstances, unity and reform initiatives are indispensable.”

On Monday, the National Assembly established a special committee to manage legislation aimed at fulfilling South Korea's USD 350 billion investment commitments to the United States as part of the trade agreement between the two countries.
