Mumbai, Sep 29 (NationPress) In light of the devastation caused by torrential rains and flooding in Marathwada and various regions across Maharashtra, the NCP(SP) and Congress on Monday urged the Governor to call a special three-day session of the state legislature. This session aims to address the urgent need for a financial package to assist farmers affected by the crisis.
NCP(SP) legislator and former Minister Jayant Patil stated, “The government must convene a special session, as the impact on farmers, livestock, homes, and public life has been catastrophic. Unfortunately, no significant assistance has been forthcoming from the government. The concerns of farmers and citizens deserve to be heard, and a comprehensive discussion on compensation and relief measures is essential.”
He further stressed the need for immediate financial aid of Rs 50,000 per acre for the farmers.
In addition, Congress Legislative Party leader Vijay Wadettiwar wrote to the Governor, requesting a special session to address the destruction caused by heavy rainfall and flooding, which has devastated crops, swept away livestock, toppled homes, and interrupted power supply. “To provide timely relief to farmers and others impacted, the government must hold discussions and announce financial assistance during this special session. The government should promptly declare a wet drought and offer complete loan waivers for farmers, along with extensive support for the affected population,” he articulated.
Wadettiwar highlighted the dire situation arising from the severe rains and flooding that have impacted numerous areas in Maharashtra, including Marathwada, Vidarbha, and Western Maharashtra.
“This extraordinary natural calamity has plunged farmers and ordinary citizens into deep distress, leading to losses that may never be recovered. Over 4 lakh hectares of standing crops have been utterly destroyed. Many farmlands have been eroded, resulting in the loss of farmers' livelihoods. It's unlikely that even 5 percent of the usual production will be achievable this season. Numerous animals have perished, houses have collapsed, and, tragically, lives have been lost due to the floods,” he noted.
He added that power supply has been compromised in various regions due to damaged electricity poles and wires. Transportation and communication networks have been severely affected, as crucial roads connecting villages and urban areas have collapsed. Contaminated drinking water is now a significant public health concern. It is vital to implement immediate and substantial policy measures to navigate the state out of this severe crisis. A wet drought declaration is essential, and a comprehensive financial aid and rehabilitation package must be rolled out for the impacted farmers, laborers, and citizens,” he emphasized.
“This is the opportune moment to fulfill our commitment to loan waivers for all affected farmers. Additionally, prompt compensation should be awarded based on accurate assessments of crops and property,” he concluded.
