Mumbai, Sep 25 (NationPress) The Leader of Opposition (LoP) in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, on Thursday urged the government and local authorities to hasten relief initiatives and, following an evaluation of crop destruction, offer full support to farmers who have been severely impacted by the heavy rains and floods in Marathwada. His sentiments were shared by NCP(SP) working president Supriya Sule, who called for the implementation of a comprehensive loan waiver for affected farmers.
In his post on X, LoP Gandhi stated, “The reports of loss of lives and significant crop damage due to torrential rains in Marathwada, Maharashtra, are truly heartbreaking. During this challenging period, my thoughts are with all the families affected. I urge the government and administration to accelerate relief measures and, after evaluating the agricultural damage, extend complete support to the farmers. I encourage Congress leaders and workers to assist the administration in providing all possible aid to those in distress.”
Moreover, Congress Legislature Party leader Vijay Wadettiwar reiterated the demand for a farm loan waiver, especially given the losses experienced in Marathwada.
“While there is a call for loan waivers for farmers, Deputy Chief Minister and Finance Minister Ajit Pawar reacted angrily. Will the government allow farmers to resort to suicide because the treasury is in dire straits?” he questioned.
“A year earlier, during the elections, these same parties pledged to waive farmers’ loans. Now, why are they providing excuses?
“The Mahayuti government is using the implementation of the Ladki Bahin Yojana as an excuse. Wasn’t that scheme also aimed at securing votes? Farmers are not receiving guaranteed prices, soybeans are infected. Farmers should be compensated with Rs 50,000 per hectare as help,” demanded Wadettiwar.
“The heavy rainfall in Marathwada has led to significant crop destruction. The Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister are currently touring, but this appears to be mere theatrics. When farmers inquired how much aid he would provide, he responded, 'Don’t engage in politics!'
“When farmers seek information about aid, where is the politics in this? Why is the government not making firm commitments to the people? Why is it concealing the amount of aid it will provide? This suggests that the government lacks the resolve to assist,” asserted Wadettiwar.
Wadettiwar pointed out that not only have the farmers' crops been ruined due to floods in Marathwada, but their lands have also suffered erosion, necessitating further support for the growers.
He declared that he would contribute six months' worth of his MLA salary to the Chief Minister's Relief Fund and urged all legislators from various parties to also donate their salaries.
Meanwhile, Supriya Sule reiterated on Thursday that, given the immense damage caused by excessive rainfall in Maharashtra, immediate assistance from the Central government is crucial.
“Furthermore, a blanket loan waiver for farmers should be enacted, and a wet drought should be proclaimed,” she said.
