How did Maharashtra Transport Minister become the first Tesla Model Y owner in India?

Mumbai, Sep 5 (NationPress) Maharashtra's Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik made history on Friday by becoming the first official owner of the Tesla Model Y in India, a significant milestone for the promotion of Electric Vehicles (EVs) in the region. Sarnaik acquired the Tesla Model Y just a day after the company's inaugural showroom was launched in Mumbai, expressing his intention to motivate individuals—particularly the youth—to adopt sustainable transportation.

During his remarks to the media outside the newly-opened Tesla showroom at Maker Maxity Mall in Bandra-Kurla Complex, Sarnaik revealed that the vehicle is a gift for his grandson.

“This purchase is more than just a personal choice—it's a declaration. My goal is to raise awareness about electric mobility. I want future generations to consider EVs as a standard part of their lives,” he stated.

Sarnaik reiterated the government's dedication to fostering eco-friendly transportation.

“Our administration is committed to creating a cleaner, greener Maharashtra. I did not benefit from any special discount. I'm simply a proud customer like everyone else,” he mentioned.

The Tesla Model Y is available in India in the rear-wheel-drive (RWD) configuration, featuring two variants: the standard RWD at Rs 59.89 lakh (ex-showroom) and the Long Range RWD at Rs 67.89 lakh (ex-showroom).

This momentous event attracted large crowds to the Tesla experience center, with families eager to take test drives and catch a glimpse of the iconic EV.

“I felt incredible being here today. The experience was beyond my expectations. This is our first time trying it,” exclaimed an enthusiastic visitor.

In alignment with the push for EVs, Sarnaik’s son and Shiv Sena leader Parvesh Sarnaik echoed his father's message.

“Electric vehicles are the future. I urge the people of Maharashtra to transition. It’s time to take decisive steps toward a sustainable future,” he urged.

Tesla’s inaugural Indian outlet spans over 4,000 square feet and serves as both a retail and experience center. It was inaugurated on July 15 by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, along with Tesla’s South Asia Regional Director Isabel Fan. The following day, Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde visited the center and took a test drive.

Earlier in July, Tesla India Motors and Energy Pvt Ltd received its official trade certificate from the Andheri Regional Transport Office (RTO), allowing the company to commence vehicle registrations and test drives in India.

Interestingly, Pratap Sarnaik's journey is a testament to aspiration and progress. Hailing from a humble background in Thane district, he has ascended to become a four-time MLA from Ovala-Majiwada and now spearheads Maharashtra’s EV initiative.

EVs are increasingly recognized as the future of transportation, offering environmental advantages, policy incentives, and advanced technology. Although challenges like infrastructure and cost persist, rising consumer interest and government backing are propelling the shift toward a cleaner automotive future.
