Mumbai, Sep 5 (NationPress) Maharashtra's Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik announced on Friday that he has recently acquired a Tesla car with the goal of raising awareness about electric mobility among the populace, particularly the youth. Sarnaik received the Model Y from Tesla’s newly inaugurated showroom located in Mumbai’s Bandra Kurla Complex.
The minister stated that his intention behind purchasing the vehicle was to foster understanding of electric mobility.
“I have taken delivery of the Tesla to promote awareness regarding electric mobility among citizens, especially the younger generation. I want children to witness these cars early on and grasp the significance of sustainable transportation,” he shared on the social media platform X.
Sarnaik also mentioned that he plans to gift the vehicle to his grandson as a symbolic gesture. However, the excitement surrounding Tesla’s entrance into India has not been as high as expected.
Since commencing bookings in mid-July, the company has received just over 600 orders, as reported earlier this week.
Globally, Tesla manages to sell that many cars within mere hours. The company anticipates delivering between 350 and 500 cars to India this year, with the first batch already arriving from Shanghai in early September.
Initial deliveries will be restricted to Mumbai, Delhi, Pune, and Gurugram. Sarnaik emphasized the importance of leading by example.
“Although the cost may be slightly elevated today, what truly matters is setting the right example and hastening EV adoption,” he remarked.
The minister also highlighted Maharashtra’s incentives, such as toll exemptions on the Atal Setu and the Samruddhi Expressway, and noted that the state transport department has already acquired around 5,000 electric buses.
Meanwhile, Tesla is advancing its plans in India, establishing charging stations in Mumbai and Delhi, and preparing to launch a new experience center in South India next year.
