Nashik, July 22 (NationPress) Maharashtra Agriculture Minister Manikrao Kokate has ignited yet another controversy by declaring that the state government is a beggar and not the farmers.
Kokate's remarks were made following his dismissal of the opposition's call for his resignation due to a video of him playing rummy during the recent monsoon session of the state legislature.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, present in Gadchiroli, expressed strong disapproval of Kokate's comments, stating that such statements from a minister are inappropriate.
During a press briefing prior, Kokate remarked, “The government collects one rupee from farmers, yet gives nothing back. So, who is the real beggar? The government is the beggar, not the farmers. However, my statement was misrepresented. One rupee isn’t a significant amount. Due to this one-rupee insurance, Maharashtra received five and a half lakh fraudulent applications, which were swiftly canceled during my administration along with new announcements.”
Previously, Kokate had stirred controversy with his comments regarding farmers' crop insurance, stating, “Nowadays, even beggars refuse to accept a single rupee. Yet, we provided crop insurance to farmers for just one rupee, but some exploited this scheme.”
Today, while clarifying his previous comments, Kokate reiterated that the government is indeed a beggar, not the farmers.
In response, CM Fadnavis remarked, “I haven’t heard any of his statements, but if he has indeed made such remarks, they are inappropriate. Such misinformation regarding crop insurance is unacceptable.”
The Congress party criticized Kokate, claiming that by labeling the government as “a beggar,” he displayed profound insensitivity.
State Congress chief Harshwardhan Sapkal stated, “A minister like Kokate should not remain in his position for even a moment. Why does the Chief Minister support him? Is Fadnavis lacking the courage to dismiss Kokate?”
Sapkal pointed out that a video of Kokate playing online rummy in the Legislative Council has been widely circulated across various media and social platforms.
“Farmers are facing hardships; compensation for losses due to unexpected rains is overdue, crops are not receiving fair prices, and promised loan waivers remain unfulfilled, with some areas struggling to re-sow due to failed crops,” he added.
He further noted that Kokate’s irresponsible comments demonstrate a complete lack of seriousness.
“By making such statements, he shamelessly acts as if he has committed no wrong. This is the peak of audacity, and it seems even the Chief Minister lacks respect from Kokate. Such an insolent minister should be promptly removed, and the fact that he hasn’t been indicates that Fadnavis is somehow powerless or restricted. These individuals tarnish Maharashtra’s reputation,” Sapkal insisted.
Sapkal emphasized that through his repeated controversial statements, Kokate has undermined the dignity of his ministerial position.
He concluded that having a person like him in a ministerial role is detrimental to both the state and its farmers.
“The rate of farmer suicides in Maharashtra is alarming, and it’s not a point of pride. Therefore, Kokate must be urgently dismissed and sent home with a coconut (a traditional symbolic farewell),” he urged.
Rohini Khadse, head of the state NCP SP women’s wing, also criticized Kokate, stating that many sacrificed their lives to build Maharashtra.
“To lead Maharashtra towards development, numerous esteemed leaders from Yashwantrao Chavan to Vilasrao Deshmukh worked tirelessly. How could one utter such a term as ‘beggar’ about such a glorious state?”
She further questioned, “Do you lack the ability to work for Maharashtra? Your only skill appears to be playing rummy.”
