Key Takeaways
Mumbai, March 16 (NationPress) Maharashtra's Food and Civil Supply Minister, Chhagan Bhujbal, urged the public on Monday to remain calm regarding the LPG supply, emphasizing the commitment of both the Central and state governments to ensure an uninterrupted supply.
During his address in the state Legislative Council, Bhujbal explained that the rise in the price of edible oil has been modest when compared to the situation prior to the conflicts in the Middle East.
He revealed that critical sectors have been recognized to prioritize the distribution of remaining commercial LPG. Hospitals, educational institutions, crematoriums, old age homes, and orphanages will receive 100% of their gas needs, while sectors such as Defence, government services, railways, aviation, and police/jail canteens are assured 70% supply. Additionally, Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation canteens, the pharmaceutical industry, seed processing, and fisheries will receive 50% of their requirements.
“LPG production at refineries has been escalated from 9,000 metric tonnes to 11,000 metric tonnes. Special committees and control rooms have been established at the district level to oversee this initiative. Regular discussions are being conducted with oil corporations such as BPCL, HPCL, and IOCL, as well as gas distributors. We have issued directives to address technical issues with gas refill booking apps and missed call services. Furthermore, police protection has been mandated for the transport and distribution of LPG. Oil companies currently possess adequate stocks, ensuring a smooth distribution process,” stated Minister Bhujbal.
He mentioned that the Central Government holds the responsibility for the supply, regulation, and pricing of petroleum products across all states in India. Given the conflict situation in the Middle East, orders were issued on March 5, 2026, to oil companies to restrict LPG supplies for domestic use to maintain a steady fuel supply. As of March 7, 2026, the price of domestic LPG cylinders has risen from Rs 852.50 to Rs 912.50, while commercial cylinder prices have increased from Rs 1,720.50 to Rs 1,835.00.
Minister Bhujbal also remarked that the state government is implementing various measures to ensure a continuous fuel supply and curb black market activities.
“On March 8, we instructed District Collectors and regional offices to establish vigilance squads aimed at combatting black marketing. The Nagpur Bench of the High Court was informed on March 11, 2026, that the state government is contemplating the distribution of kerosene as an alternative fuel to LPG,” he added.
During the period from January to March, vigilance squads have conducted numerous inspections, leading to the seizure of 1,208 gas cylinders valued at Rs 3,366,411, with 23 cases filed and 18 arrests made.
