Maharashtra Police Enforces Helmet Rule for Officers; Penalties Ahead for Non-Compliance
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Mumbai, April 11 (NationPress) In a significant move to enhance road safety, the Maharashtra Police has instituted a requirement for all police officers and personnel to don helmets while operating two-wheelers. This mandate has been communicated by the Director General of Police (DGP) to all commissionerates and district police units throughout the state.
This decision stems from a recent high-level meeting in Nagpur, where the DGP emphasized the necessity for law enforcers to serve as role models. He remarked that if police personnel do not adhere to traffic regulations, it becomes challenging to foster compliance among the general public. Any personnel discovered in violation of this order will face stringent disciplinary measures.
A study by the Maharashtra Police revealed that two-wheeler riders have constituted 35 to 40 percent of all fatalities or severe injuries resulting from road accidents over the past decade. Experts assert that appropriate helmet usage can drastically mitigate the risk of fatal head injuries. However, compliance with helmet regulations remains inconsistent across the state. While over 80 percent of riders in urban areas like Mumbai and Nagpur wear helmets, the adherence rate plummets to below 20 percent in various other districts.
Under the new directive, any police personnel caught riding without a helmet while on duty will be penalized under Section 194(D) of the Motor Vehicles Act. Furthermore, if images of such infractions surface on social media, they will be regarded as serious indiscipline and documented in the officer’s service record, which could influence career advancement.
The DGP's office has instructed all units to ensure prompt compliance with this directive and to submit a compliance report to headquarters at the earliest opportunity. This initiative by the Police Department is being recognized as a pivotal step toward improving road safety; officials believe that when police personnel exemplify adherence to the rules, the public will also become more aware of the critical importance of wearing helmets.
