Maharashtra rains: Waterlogging, flood alerts hit Mumbai, Kolhapur, Raigad on 4 July
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Heavy rainfall battered large parts of Maharashtra on 4 July, triggering severe waterlogging, traffic gridlock, and flood-like conditions across multiple districts, including Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, Palghar, Thane, Kolhapur, Raigad, and Lonavala. Authorities issued high alerts and red alerts in several vulnerable zones as incessant rain forced water into homes, shops, and arterial roads.
Mumbai and Navi Mumbai Hit Hard
In Mumbai, heavy showers caused severe waterlogging in areas including Mahim, paralysing vehicular movement and snarling traffic across the city. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) reported that over the preceding 24 hours, the downpour and strong winds had resulted in more than 91 incidents of fallen trees and branches, around 30 cases of short circuits, 19 wall collapse incidents, and multiple waterlogging complaints citywide.
In Navi Mumbai, continuous rain led to severe waterlogging beneath Turbhe railway station, impeding pedestrian movement and inconveniencing commuters. The adjacent stretch of Thane-Belapur Road was completely submerged, further choking traffic flow.
Bhushi Dam Overflows in Lonavala, Tourists Warned
In Lonavala, the overflow of the famous Bhushi Dam following relentless rainfall drew large crowds of tourists eager to witness the cascading water. Authorities urged visitors to strictly observe safety guidelines, citing strong currents and slippery conditions along the dam's banks.
High Alert in Kolhapur and Red Alert in Raigad
In Kolhapur, river levels surged sharply after two consecutive days of heavy rain. As many as 10 barrages, including the Rajaram Weir, were submerged, prompting authorities to suspend movement across affected crossings and issue a high alert. In Raigad, officials declared a red alert as the Amba River approached the danger mark, raising the risk of flooding in nearby localities.
Markets Submerged in Bhiwandi, Residents Stranded
The situation in Bhiwandi was particularly severe, with markets including the Teen Batti Bhaji Market submerged under floodwaters. Traders reported significant losses as water entered their shops. Residents described knee-deep water on roads that made movement extremely difficult.
Resident Deepak Vishwakarma said he was on his way to work when he encountered flooded roads. He noted that the continuous rainfall and the red alert had left him uncertain whether to proceed or return home, where waterlogging was equally severe.
In Nalasopara, roads resembled flowing streams, leaving several vehicles — including a fire engine — stranded in deep water. In Palghar, the Ambedkar Nagar area was inundated, with floodwaters entering multiple houses. Authorities across the state remain on alert as heavy rainfall is expected to continue in the coming days.
