Is the ECI Selectively Deleting Voters in Bengal as Alleged by Mamata?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Feb 3 (NationPress) West Bengal's Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee leveled serious allegations against the Election Commission of India (ECI) on Tuesday, claiming they are engaging in the selective removal of voters from Assembly constituencies represented by Trinamool Congress legislators during the ongoing special intensive revision (SIR).
"In the constituencies where Bharatiya Janata Party legislators serve, only about 3,000 to 4,000 voters' names are removed. However, in those with Trinamool Congress representatives, the number of deleted voters can soar between 40,000 and 100,000. In my constituency of Bhabanipur in South Kolkata, around 40,000 names have already been eliminated from the draft voters' list. Their ultimate goal is to erase a total of 100,000 names from Bhabanipur," the Chief Minister stated to reporters in New Delhi on Thursday afternoon.
During the press conference, Mamata Banerjee also criticized ECI's Director General (Information Technology), Seema Khanna, accusing her of playing a major role in the removal of legitimate voters' names in West Bengal.
"Who is Seema Khanna? She is merely a BJP agent embedded within the ECI," the Chief Minister remarked.
Additionally, she claimed that the ECI had unilaterally removed 5.8 million names from the draft voters' list without any consultation with the electoral registration officers (EROs). "The ECI is now indiscriminately issuing notices for hearings under the guise of 'logical discrepancy.' Even the esteemed economist Amartya Sen was summoned for a hearing," she added.
She further accused the BJP of orchestrating this unjust activity from behind the scenes, using the ECI as a tool, knowing they cannot effectively challenge the Trinamool Congress through democratic means.
Moreover, Mamata Banerjee stated that through central investigative agencies like the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and Enforcement Directorate (ED), the BJP was not only targeting opposition leaders but also harassing ordinary citizens and businesspeople. "I do not blame the central agencies; rather, I oppose their misuse," she emphasized.
She questioned why FIRs should not be filed against the ECI for causing numerous deaths due to their poorly planned revision process.
Regarding her meeting with Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar on Tuesday, the Chief Minister alleged that Kumar behaved inappropriately towards the delegation she led.
Accompanying her at the press conference was Abhishek Banerjee, general secretary of the Trinamool Congress and a Lok Sabha member.
"The CEC's arrogance is evident in the fact that six letters from Mamata Banerjee, an elected Chief Minister, went unanswered and received no acknowledgment," he remarked.
