Kolkata, Nov 10 (NationPress) West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee stated on Monday that the decision to accept the Goods and Services Tax (GST) proposed by the Union government was a significant error by the Trinamool Congress-led administration.
"We embraced the GST in good faith, aiming to respect the federal structure of our democracy. However, given the current situation, it appears that this was a major blunder on our part," the Chief Minister remarked while addressing reporters in Siliguri, located in the Darjeeling district. This was during her three-day tour of north Bengal to assess the aftermath of the recent floods and landslides that resulted in numerous fatalities.
According to CM Banerjee, while the Union government is collecting taxes from West Bengal, it is failing to disburse the state's rightful share.
"The Union government diverts all funds to states governed by the BJP. They should not hesitate to share the tax revenue with us. The Union government has already amassed Rs 20,000 crore from our state," she noted.
During her speech, CM Banerjee also declared that a cricket stadium will be established in Siliguri, named after Richa Ghosh, the wicketkeeper-batter from the Indian women's cricket team that captured the Women's World Cup.
Furthermore, she launched a fierce critique against the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Union government concerning the ongoing special intensive revision (SIR) by the Election Commission of India (ECI) in West Bengal.
"Why was there such urgency to conduct the SIR in a brief period? It could have been done over two years. Many lives have been lost due to the stress of the SIR. It is an affront to the people of West Bengal that they have to re-verify their identities," CM Banerjee expressed.
She also criticized Union Home Minister Amit Shah regarding the issue of illegal border infiltration.
"The Border Security Force (BSF) is tasked with securing our borders. Monitoring illegal infiltration falls under their jurisdiction. The BSF operates directly under the Union Ministry of Home Affairs, so the Union Home Minister must take accountability for this issue," the Chief Minister stated.
