Saharanpur (Uttar Pradesh), March 14 (NationPress) - Congress MP Imran Masood came to the defense of Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, regarding his comments on Kanshi Ram, affectionately referred to as Bahujan Nayak. Gandhi remarked on Friday that had Jawaharlal Nehru been alive today, Kanshi Ram would have likely been the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh.
This statement was made during an event at the Indira Gandhi Pratishthan in Lucknow, celebrating Kanshi Ram's birth anniversary.
Masood expressed support for Gandhi's views, stating to IANS, 'Kanshi Ram's political legacy, along with Baba Saheb Ambedkar's ideology, was effectively championed by the Congress.
He continued, 'The implementation of reservations and the empowerment of marginalized communities were initiatives led by the Congress; no other party has made such contributions.'
Furthermore, he emphasized that Congress is not leveraging this issue for electoral advantage, but rather as a part of a broader social movement.
In his tribute to Kanshi Ram, Gandhi acknowledged the leader's commitment to fighting for equality and social justice for marginalized groups.
Gandhi also admitted that Congress had previously fallen short in its duties, which led figures like Kanshi Ram to pursue independent political avenues. 'Had Congress performed its role effectively back then, Kanshi Ram wouldn't have had to undertake a separate struggle,' he noted, insisting that Nehru would have facilitated Kanshi Ram's ascension to Chief Minister.
During the event, a proposal was passed advocating for the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian award, to be conferred upon Kanshi Ram.
In response to this proposal, Mayawati, the chief of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), accused Congress of trying to 'exploit his name,' citing the party's historical 'anti-Dalit' stance.
