New Delhi, March 15 (NationPress) The Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, paid tribute to the late Kanshi Ram, the founder of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), on his birth anniversary, recognizing his vital role in promoting social justice and advancing the rights of marginalized communities.
Kanshi Ram, revered as Bahujan Nayak, was born on March 15, 1934, in Pirthipur Bunga village, located in the Ropar district of Punjab, into a Ramdasia Sikh family belonging to the Scheduled Caste.
A key figure in social reform, he dedicated his life to mobilizing the political power of Bahujans, which encompasses Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, Other Backward Classes, and other historically marginalized groups.
He founded several influential organizations aimed at empowering these communities, such as the All India Backward and Minority Communities Employees Federation (BAMCEF) in 1971, the Dalit Shoshit Samaj Sangharsh Samiti (DS-4), and, in 1984, the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP).
Kanshi Ram eventually passed the leadership of the BSP to Mayawati, who served as the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh for four terms.
