Lucknow, March 4 (NationPress) Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) leader Mayawati expressed her disapproval of the Uttar Pradesh government's move to eliminate unauthorized loudspeakers from places of worship during Ramzan. She called on officials to ensure equal treatment for all religions without prejudice.
In a post on X, Mayawati stated, "India is a secular nation that honors all faiths. In this context, both the central and state administrations should provide equal treatment to adherents of all religions without any bias. However, the discriminatory approach towards Muslims, even in matters of faith, is unacceptable."
She emphasized that rules concerning restrictions and exemptions for religious celebrations ought to be applied uniformly across all belief systems.
"The regulations pertaining to restrictions and exemptions for festivals across various religions must be enforced impartially, which currently does not appear to be the case," she remarked.
The BSP leader cautioned that such selective enforcement has the potential to disrupt societal peace and harmony. "It is inevitable that societal peace and harmony will suffer as a result, which is alarming. The government must take this issue seriously," she added.
Ramzan, which commenced in India on Sunday, signifies a month of fasting and special prayers for Muslims. Celebrations are also taking place in numerous other nations following the sighting of the crescent moon.
During this month, Muslims fast from dawn until dusk and engage in special evening prayers known as Tarawih, during which the entire Quran is recited.
In the meantime, the Uttar Pradesh authorities have initiated a campaign against loudspeakers that exceed the specified noise limits at all religious locations.
The police are rigorously enforcing this directive, leading Muslim religious leaders to request concessions for loudspeaker usage during Ramzan.
