Ningbo, China - September 14 (NationPress) In a thrilling final that witnessed the emergence of the latest Chinese star, Peng Xinlu, who obliterated the world record, India’s Meghana Sajjanar secured the bronze medal in the women’s 10m air rifle event. This marked her debut medal at the ISSF World Cup, helping India conclude the season-ending International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) World Cup Rifle/Pistol in Ningbo with a commendable fifth place on the medal chart, bagging one gold and one bronze.
Meghana achieved a total score of 230.0 in the final, with Jeanette Hegg Duestad from Norway taking home the silver. Meanwhile, Peng clinched gold, surpassing the previous world record set by compatriot Wang Zifei with an impressive score of 255.3.
On Saturday, Esha Singh had earlier secured a gold medal for India in the women’s 10m air pistol, contributing to the team’s strong performance against a highly competitive field. China dominated the medal tally with three golds, followed by Norway with two.
In the qualification round on Sunday morning, Meghana posted a solid score of 632.7, securing the seventh spot while Peng led with an outstanding 637.4.
The Chinese competitor kicked off the 24-shot final with a flawless 10.9, setting a high standard as Meghana initially found herself at the bottom of the eight-woman field after the first series of five shots.
However, a remarkable second series score of 52.3 propelled her to sixth place, and she consistently shot no less than 10.2 in the subsequent ten shots, including a pivotal 10.9, achieving her first-ever medal at this prestigious level after nearly a decade.
With Mariia Vasileva trailing closely behind by just 0.3 before the 19th shot, Meghana still had some work left, but two impressive 10.4s ensured her victory over Mariia's aspirations.
Additionally, India reached another final on the same day, marking their fourth in Ningbo, as Kiran Ankush Jadhav scored 590 in the men’s 50m rifle 3 positions qualification, securing the fourth spot. Unfortunately, a poor start in both the Kneeling and second Prone positions saw him finish eighth with a score of 406.7.
Other Indian competitors included Paris bronze medalist Swapnil Kusale, who scored 587, placing him 21st overall, while Babu Singh Panwar scored 583. In the women’s air rifle, Olympian Ramita Jindal finished 22nd overall with a score of 629.8, and Kashika Pradhan scored 626.6.
