Mexico City, July 13 (NationPress) Mexico has labeled the recent tariffs imposed by the United States as unjust. In response, both nations have initiated formal discussions through a dedicated bilateral working group, as announced by the Mexican government.
According to a joint statement from the foreign affairs and economy ministries, a significant meeting took place in Washington on Friday, where Mexican officials were informed that the new tariffs would be implemented starting August 1.
"We have made it clear that we find this to be inequitable and we do not concur," the ministries stated.
To safeguard businesses and employment on both sides of the border, the two countries have agreed to form a permanent bilateral working group aimed at addressing critical issues in their relationship and exploring alternatives to prevent the enforcement of the tariffs, the statement indicated.
The group will also tackle matters related to border security, migration, and water management, as reported by Xinhua news agency.
"As of July 11, we have created an avenue to resolve any potential imposition of tariffs on August 1. In essence, Mexico is already engaged in negotiations," the statement concluded.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum reiterated the nation's opposition to the tariffs during her press briefing on Friday morning.
"We believe that tariffs are not the answer. The optimal way to compete – even for the United States – is to enhance our trade agreement," she stated, referencing the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement.
