Navi Mumbai, July 12 (NationPress) Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis emphasized on Saturday that the construction of the Navi Mumbai International Airport must reach completion by September 30.

The government has mandated an increase in workforce to expedite the project’s completion,” stated the Chief Minister during a site visit alongside Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, where they assessed the airport's progress.

He mentioned to the press that the airport's construction is currently at 94 percent completion. “The terminal building is finished, and interior work is underway. The exterior ceiling work is progressing rapidly. We observed the baggage handling system, designed to allow 360-degree visibility of bag barcodes. The goal is to create the fastest baggage claim system in the world. This airport will feature two runways capable of handling 90 million passengers annually, greatly surpassing Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Airport, and it will operate as a greenfield airport utilizing green electricity,” he added.

Plans are in place for an underground metro that will connect to the airport, ensuring that walking or vehicle transport to the airport will not be necessary, according to his statements.

Sources indicate that the Navi Mumbai International Airport Private Limited (NMIAL) was specifically created for the design, development, construction, operation, maintenance, management, and expansion of this greenfield international airport project in Navi Mumbai.

This initiative is a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) involving Mumbai International Airport Ltd, which holds a 74 percent stake, and the City and Industrial Development Corporation of Maharashtra Ltd (CIDCO), holding 26 percent.

The airport is set to meet the increasing demand for air traffic in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region and Western India, while enhancing India’s connectivity on a global scale.

Located 14 km from the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) Sea Port, 22 km from the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) in Taloja, 35 km from the Mumbai Port Trust via the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link, 32 km from Thane, and 40 km from Bhiwandi, the airport is strategically placed.

Designed for both domestic and international travelers, it will feature cutting-edge facilities, including a 3,700-meter runway for large commercial aircraft, modern passenger terminals, and sophisticated air traffic control systems. Terminal 1 is expected to serve up to 20 million passengers annually (MPPA).

“The completion of this airport will significantly boost the local economy, enhancing accessibility and creating new commercial opportunities for the Navi Mumbai region. Initially, it will accommodate 90 million passengers annually and handle 0.5 million tons of cargo,” sources have reported.
