Mumbai, Oct 8 (NationPress) Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate the Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) on Wednesday, ushering in one of the most advanced and eco-friendly airports in India.
This new greenfield airport, covering an area of 1,160 hectares, is being developed at a cost of Rs 19,650 crore. Domestic flight operations are anticipated to begin in early December 2025, followed by international flights two months later.
Currently, one of the two runways has been completed. An integrated system will connect all terminals, enhancing passenger convenience.
To ensure ease for travelers, a direct check-in facility at the metro station along with the “One-Up End-to-End Baggage Facility” app for baggage services will be available.
With a focus on environmental sustainability, the airport emphasizes green energy and water conservation. The terminal will reflect Indian culture through digital art, and artificial intelligence (AI) will be incorporated into various operational processes.
To improve connectivity, a new road is in the works from Atal Setu to Kosthal Road. Approval for Metro Line 8, linking Navi Mumbai and Mumbai airports, is expected soon, along with the introduction of a water taxi service. The airport will feature parking for 350 aircraft and dedicated taxiways for both runways. The entire project is slated for completion within four years.
The launch of the Navi Mumbai International Airport is poised to significantly boost air traffic capacity in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, symbolizing India's progressive development.
According to the NMIA fact sheet, the airport is expected to handle 90 million passengers and 3.25 million metric tonnes of cargo annually upon full completion.
The initial phase will accommodate 20 million passengers and 0.5 million metric tonnes of cargo capacity. The airport is owned by Navi Mumbai International Airport Ltd, which comprises MIAL (74 percent) and CIDCO (26 percent). An Aerodrome License was granted to NMIA by the Director General of Civil Aviation on September 30.
The NMIA and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport together create a multi-airport system for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, establishing an aviation hub with a combined capacity of up to 150 million passengers annually. NMIA will alleviate congestion and position Mumbai among global multi-airport systems.
