Aizawl, March 27 (NationPress) The Chief Minister of Mizoram, Lalduhoma, remarked on Thursday that the exemplary conduct demonstrated by former MLAs in the state assembly has prompted current legislators to adhere to the same standards. While speaking at the General Body Meeting of the Former Legislators Association of Mizoram (FLAM), he pointed out that Mizoram was one of the first states to initiate the live broadcast of Assembly Sessions, a move that has inspired successive generations of MLAs to maintain decorum and dignity during assemblies.
“Thanks to the good conduct of previous MLAs in the House, current MLAs strive to uphold these same values,” Lalduhoma stated, stressing that FLAM members have provided an admirable example for future leaders.
He wished for their physical and mental well-being, urging them to stay engaged and impart their wisdom to younger generations. As the President of the ruling Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM), he reflected on his political journey, noting the unpredictability of politics and the challenges of being a candidate.
“With a high number of candidates running, ultimately, what matters is the decision of the people,” he explained.
Addressing the concerning rise in the number of young male deaths in the state, the Chief Minister emphasized the need for significant efforts to confront this issue and reduce the alarming death rate.
"I have personally investigated the rising fatalities among young individuals and discovered that for every young female death, there are seven young male fatalities. This tragic situation has resulted in numerous young widows in the state lacking adequate means of support," Lalduhoma stated.
He highlighted that without a united effort, this pressing issue cannot be resolved, and initiatives should begin within every family.
The Chief Minister also launched two books written by Prof. J.V. Hluna during the event. FLAM President Liansuama, in his address, expressed appreciation to the Mizoram government for prioritizing the needs of ex-MLAs and recognized the ongoing efforts made over the years to achieve this.
Founded in 1994, FLAM currently comprises 117 members and 59 associate members, including the widows of deceased former MLAs and MPs. This year, two associate members, Rothangi (wife of Ch. Chhunga) and Nghakliani (wife of Lalrinliana of Dawrpui), celebrated their centenary birthdays and were honored at the gathering. Among the 33 members elected during Mizoram’s inaugural Union Territory elections in 1972 (30 elected and 3 nominated), seven members are still living, with three attending the meeting.
