Aizawl, Jan 14 (NationPress) During the launch of the "Empowering Mizoram Sports" (EMS) initiative, Chief Minister Lalduhoma remarked on Tuesday that while Mizos possess a deep enthusiasm for sports, their performance in comparison to other states has been insufficient.
The Chief Minister inaugurated the EMS program under the Mizoram 'Bana Kaih' scheme.
In his address at the opening ceremony, the Chief Minister reiterated that Mizos are inherently passionate about sports, yet their competitive results against other states are lacking.
"Achieving medals at the National Games is a rare occurrence, and qualification in various sports remains a hurdle. We believe this is not due to a deficiency in talent, but rather a failure to fully cultivate and display our capabilities. Numerous gifted youths in Mizoram are deprived of proper training opportunities, and this initiative is designed to bridge that gap," stated Lalduhoma, who is a former IPS officer.
He emphasized the need to work towards improved outcomes in both national and international events, with the hope of Mizo athletes securing more medals.
The Chief Minister mentioned that the government has already begun its initiatives, and the effects will become noticeable over time.
He further noted that with India gearing up to host the 2036 Olympics and the Indian Olympic Association officially bidding on October 1, 2024, this presents a tremendous opportunity for Mizo sportspeople.
"Our vision is to cultivate young talents now to represent India at the 2036 Olympics. To facilitate this, the Empowering Mizoram Sports program has been launched with a budget of Rs 2.5 crore under the Bana Kaih scheme."
Mizoram's flagship project, the handholding scheme - 'Bana Kaih', was initiated in September of this year.
The Empowering Mizoram Sports initiative aspires to establish sports coaching and talent development programs throughout Mizoram.
An official from the Sports Department indicated that as part of this initiative, basic coaching will be offered to children aged between 8 to 15, concentrating on their preparation for impending competitions, especially the 2036 Olympics.
Prioritization will be given to sports that have a higher potential for Olympic qualification compared to other disciplines, the official added.
The program will function under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, encouraging community engagement and shared responsibility with the government to maintain ongoing interest and commitment.
The EMS program will initially be rolled out as a pilot project in two to three selected districts before expanding to the entire state.
State Sports and Youth Services Minister Lalnghinglova Hmar stressed that the EMS initiative aims to identify and nurture talent from even the most remote villages.
However, it is essential that the communities express interest in coaching, he stated.
They will also handle logistical requirements, meals, and accommodations, he added.
This initiative seeks to instill a genuine sense of ownership and dedication, according to the Minister.
"Our ultimate objective is to equip our athletes for the 2036 Olympics, which India aims to host. We are resolute in our goal to see Mizo youth, both men and women, compete at the highest levels on the global stage," Hmar concluded.
