Aizawl, March 25 (NationPress) Mizoram's Chief Minister Lalduhoma announced on Tuesday that India is gearing up to host the 2036 Olympics. In line with this aspiration, Mizoram has launched the 'Vision 2036' initiative aimed at developing young Mizo athletes who can represent India on the Olympic stage.
During the inauguration of the newly built Mizoram Badminton Centre located at Zuangtui, Aizawl, the Chief Minister commented that many of the world's elite badminton players hail from Asia, and India is acknowledged for its outstanding badminton talent.
He pointed out that with young Mizo players performing remarkably well at the national level, they possess a significant opportunity to reach international standards.
The impressive achievements of Mizo youth in national age-group competitions underscore this potential, and the Chief Minister expressed his happiness that the new badminton centre will provide enhanced training for emerging players.
Lalduhoma remarked that badminton is a sport where Mizo individuals naturally excel.
The Empowering Mizoram Sports (EMS) initiative is being activated to discover and cultivate young talent, as stated by the Chief Minister.
The government is dedicated to supporting athletes and ensuring they receive comprehensive training, while ongoing efforts are being made to improve sports infrastructure, he noted.
The Chief Minister expressed his appreciation to his predecessors, former Chief Minister Zoramthanga and current Deputy Chief Minister Tawnluia, for establishing the groundwork for this project.
State Urban Development and Poverty Alleviation Minister, K. Sapdanga, acknowledged the contributions of the previous state government and the Mizoram Badminton Association in creating the badminton centre.
He highlighted that this modern facility, developed with significant government investment, would act as a platform to nurture skilled athletes who will bring pride to Mizoram and India.
State Sports and Youth Services Minister, Lalnghinglova Hmar, shared that he visited the Gopichand Academy in Hyderabad and had discussions with Pullela Gopichand.
He expressed hope that with the establishment of such a top-notch facility, Mizoram would continue to achieve remarkable progress in sports.
He reiterated that the Mizoram Badminton Association will manage the badminton centre, which will serve as a hub for developing future Olympians aligned with 'Vision 2036'.
The Mizoram Badminton Centre was constructed under the Aizawl Smart City Limited project, with a total expenditure of Rs 18.21 crore. The centre's construction commenced in June 2022 and was finalized in March 2025.
