Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Aizawl, Jan 29 (NationPress) The Chief Minister of Mizoram, Lalduhoma, has once again called upon the youth and all segments of society to refrain from drug use and take an active stance against the escalating drug problem. During the inauguration of the National Cadet Corps (NCC) Mizoram Group Headquarters in Aizawl, the Chief Minister highlighted his worries regarding the rising prevalence of substance abuse among the youth and emphasized the importance of protecting them from these detrimental influences.
He stated that disciplined, skilled, and dedicated youth must be given more opportunities to demonstrate their abilities and talents. To achieve these goals, the state government has decided to set up its own NCC Group Headquarters.
Last year, the Mizoram government executed a special initiative from September to December 2025 to combat drug smuggling from external sources, especially from Myanmar. The state police collaborated with the Excise and Narcotics Department and the Young Mizo Association (YMA), the largest civil society organization in the state, to conduct this operation alongside awareness campaigns.
After the brief inaugural event, the Chief Minister convened a meeting with ministers and senior NCC officials.
In his address, Lalduhoma reminisced about the efforts to establish the NCC Group Headquarters in Mizoram and expressed optimism that the state's youth would actively engage in NCC activities and utilize the platform for constructive character development.
With this advancement, NCC Mizoram, which was previously managed under Assam, will now operate under its own dedicated Group Headquarters.
Major General Anurag Vij, the Additional Director General of the NCC for the North Eastern Region, stated that the aim of the NCC is to train and guide youth to become self-disciplined, courageous, and responsible citizens who contribute positively to their families, society, and the nation while remaining free from substance abuse and unhealthy lifestyles.
He also noted that the NCC is ready to provide full support whenever the state government initiates programs aligned with these objectives.
Major General Vij observed that while the youth from Northeast India are disciplined and capable, they are sometimes viewed as being less integrated with other regions of the country. To tackle this issue, the NCC intends to enhance exposure by promoting more interaction with individuals from other states, thereby fostering mutual understanding.
On the topic of infrastructure, NCC officials pointed out the necessity for appropriate accommodations and mentioned that if the state government provides land, the NCC could construct its own facilities. The land need not be permanently transferred but could be offered on a long-term lease.
Currently, Mizoram has four NCC units comprising approximately 8,000 cadets. With the establishment of the Group Headquarters, it is anticipated that NCC activities in the state will continue to expand.
