Modi's letter underscored that 20 June 1947 marked a defining moment when representatives from the western districts of undivided Bengal voted to ensure that West Bengal remained an integral part of India. The Prime Minister paid tribute to Syama Prasad Mookerjee, crediting him with articulating the aspirations of those who wished to stay within the Indian Union at a time of 'uncertainty and upheaval.'

'20th June honours a democratic decision that preserved West Bengal's unique linguistic, cultural and civilisational identity within India,' Modi wrote, adding that the day 'reminds us of a defining moment when history stood at a crossroads, and visionary leadership ensured that millions of people retained their cherished connection with Bharat.'

Modi Praises Adhikari's First Month in Office

The Prime Minister also used the letter to commend Adhikari — the ninth Chief Minister of West Bengal — for the pace and direction of governance in his first month. Modi specifically praised the state government's decision to join the Ayushman Bharat health insurance scheme, calling it a move that 'will benefit crores of families.' He also noted the government's steps to fast-track land availability for border fencing and security as 'equally noteworthy.'

Modi highlighted public appreciation for measures including free bus travel for women, the rollout of the Annapurna Yojana, and the expansion of the Maa Ahar scheme. He also praised efforts to implement the 7th Pay Commission for state government employees, who he acknowledged had 'faced troubles for years.'

Centre's Financial Commitments to West Bengal

Assuring the state of the Union Government's continued backing, Modi disclosed that nearly ₹40,000 crore had already been released to accelerate development works that were previously stalled — including the Jal Jeevan Mission and infrastructure projects. He added that approximately ₹15,000 crore had been allocated for railway development, with a further ₹60,000 crore in the pipeline.

'The Central Government will support the state in all ways possible,' Modi wrote, framing the financial commitments as a signal of renewed Centre-state cooperation under the new West Bengal administration.
