Guwahati, Jan 18 (NationPress) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday vehemently criticized the prior Congress administrations for their allocation of a “meager budget” towards the railway infrastructure in Assam.
He asserted, “During Congress's tenure at the Centre, Assam was granted only around Rs 2,000 crore for the rail budget, but under the BJP administration, this figure has surged to nearly Rs 10,000 crore annually, a fivefold increase.”
PM Modi emphasized that this substantial investment has catalyzed extensive infrastructure development, introducing new rail lines, enhancing capacity through doubling and electrification, and improving passenger amenities.
He also announced the initiation of three new train services from Kaliabor, marking a pivotal enhancement in Assam's rail connectivity.
The Prime Minister highlighted that the Vande Bharat Sleeper Train will link Guwahati with Kolkata, facilitating a more comfortable long-distance travel experience, while two Amrit Bharat Express trains will serve key stations across Assam, West Bengal, Bihar, and Uttar Pradesh, directly aiding millions of travelers.
PM Modi reiterated that these trains will enable Assam's merchants to access new markets, grant students better access to educational institutions, and streamline travel across various regions of the nation.
He stated that such connectivity improvements instill confidence that the Northeast is no longer sidelined in development; it is now at the forefront and close to the heart of Delhi.
PM Modi reflected on the historical distance that the Northeast has faced, both physically and emotionally.
He noted that for many years, the region's populace felt as though progress was occurring elsewhere, leaving them behind, which adversely affected their economy and trust.
He pointed out that the BJP, through its central and state governments, has transformed this perception by prioritizing the development of the Northeast.
He acknowledged that efforts have been made concurrently to connect Assam via roadways, railways, airways, and waterways.
Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Modi conducted the 'bhoomi pujan' for the Kaziranga Elevated Corridor Project (4-Laning of Kaliabor-Numaligarh segment of NH-715), valued at over Rs 6,950 crore.
