Jammu, March 25 (NationPress) Following the announcement of severing ties by two members of the Hurriyat Conference, Union Home Minister Amit Shah stated on Tuesday that separatism has been relegated to history in Kashmir, encouraging additional groups to step forward.
In a post on social media, HM Shah expressed, “Separatism has become history in Kashmir. The unifying policies of the Modi government have tossed separatism out of J&K. Two organizations associated with the Hurriyat have announced they are cutting all ties with separatism. I welcome this significant step towards strengthening Bharat's unity and urge all such groups to abandon separatism once and for all. This is a major victory for PM Shri @narendramodi Ji’s vision of fostering a developed, peaceful, and unified Bharat.”
However, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah opted not to comment on the Union Home Minister’s remarks, stating, “I have not seen the tweet. I will comment when I see it.”
It’s noteworthy that in a significant blow to the Hurriyat Conference, two of its prominent associated organizations — Jammu Kashmir People’s Movement and Democratic Political Movement (DPM) — declared their complete disassociation from the separatist umbrella organization on Monday.
This decision follows the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) imposing a five-year ban on the Awami Action Committee (ACC), led by Mirwaiz Umer Farooq, under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. The Centre also issued a similar order under the UAPA to prohibit J&K Ittehadul Muslimeen (JKIM), led by Maulvi Masroor Abbas Ansari, for five years.
Since the abrogation of Article 370 on August 5, 2019, the Hurriyat Conference has become virtually inactive.
Advocate Mohammad Shafi Reshi, leader of DPM, announced his complete separation from the hard-line Geelani faction of the Hurriyat Conference.
It is important to note that Advocate Shafi also previously served as the political secretary to the hardline separatist leader, the late Syed Ali Shah Geelani.
The All Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC) was established on July 31, 1993, as a political coalition of 26 political, social, and religious organizations.
The APHC was created as a collective separatist political front. Mehmood Ahmed Saghar was the inaugural convener of the APHC in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK).
On September 7, 2003, the APHC fractured into two primary factions: the Mirwaiz faction and the Geelani faction.
Mirwaiz Umar Farooq is the founder and chairman of the Mirwaiz faction, while Masarat Alam Bhat is the interim chairman of the Geelani faction, having succeeded Syed Ali Shah Geelani after his death.
