Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, March 8 (NationPress) Prime Minister Narendra Modi criticized the Mamata Banerjee-led West Bengal government for what he termed a serious affront to President Droupadi Murmu, labeling it as a disrespect to the Constitution and an act that threatens the core values of democracy.
Speaking to a large audience at the DDA Ground in Burari, New Delhi, PM Modi remarked, "The TMC government in West Bengal has shown grave disrespect towards President Droupadi Murmu. She had traveled to Bengal to honor a significant festival for the Santhal community... Yet, instead of recognizing her presence, the TMC chose to boycott this important event. President Murmu, who belongs to the tribal community, has tirelessly worked for the upliftment of tribal welfare."
His comments followed President Murmu's expression of dissatisfaction regarding the last-minute change in the venue for the Santhal Conference in Darjeeling district of West Bengal on Saturday.
The conference was initially set to take place at Phansidewa, but the location was changed to a smaller venue at Gossaipur after the state administration reportedly denied permission, citing security issues.
During her visit, President Murmu voiced her concerns about the unexpected venue change and the disruption it caused to attendees. She also pointed out that neither Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee nor any members of her Cabinet greeted her during her time in the state.
"The TMC government allowed this significant event to descend into chaos. This is not just an insult to the President, but it also constitutes a disrespect to the Constitution of India. It undermines the spirit of the Constitution itself. For someone who has dedicated her life to achieving great heights, this is an insult to every sister and daughter," he added.
PM Modi criticized the Trinamool Congress for its 'dirty politics' and for offending a tribal leader, asserting that the party's arrogance will ultimately lead to its downfall.
"In our nation, it is said that no matter how powerful a person becomes, they will ultimately face the consequences of their ego. Today, from the capital, I urge all of you... The TMC's dirty politics and power arrogance, which disrespected the dignity of a tribal President, will soon come crashing down. The enlightened citizens of West Bengal will never forgive the TMC for disrespecting a woman, a tribal leader, the President of our nation. The country will not forgive them, nor will the tribal community or the women of this country," he asserted.
The Trinamool Congress government has faced severe backlash from various segments of society over the recent events concerning the President's program.
In response, both Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Trinamool Congress General Secretary Abhisek Banerjee have taken to social media to counter the criticisms.
